Review: Apostasy

stan's recent post about the apostasy movie reminded me that i had watched it last month, so i thought i'd write a review.

please note this will probably contain some spoilers so if you care about that sort of thing hold off on reading this.. first i want to say that this is probably one of the most if not the most accurate and reasonable cinematic portrayals of jws.

however here is a list of little inaccuracies: an outdated view that preaching to all the world can 'make' the end come, jesus briefly portrayed with long hair, judicial reinstatement meetings being called "guidance meetings", a normal weekly public talk being introduced as "the first in a series of talks he's prepared for us", applause at the end of a local needs part, and a jw saying of god "you need to earn his love, it's conditional" ( i know this is basically true in practice but they'd rarely say it out loud).

Listening to the talk about Alex after she died made me feel ill that I believed that rubbish once. It all sounds so stupid once you've been away from it for a while, you can see the brainwashing in the elders talk about shunning. I enjoyed the film overall though

I'm considering putting off my leaving

i just wanted to share with you the thoughts that i've had lately.. my plan was to get a job, become independent and then leaving the org throughout this year 2018. i'm going to achieve the first step in a matter of weeks, the second one soon afterwards but maybe i will wait a little longer for the last one.. one year ago a friend of mine was reinstated.

we weren't very close friends back then, although we got along well.

but, since no many jws in my town want to hang out with him (because of his being a former disfellowshipped), we started to talk and go out more often and in a matter of half a year we've become very close friends, like brothers.

EU Court Ruling Against WT on Data-Protection

today's london times reports on the july ruling of the eu court that forces the organisation country to comply with data protection.. the action originated in finland but the ruling will affect every eu country.

the cult tried unsuccessfully to argue that the notes taken by jws in the door-to-door work were personal and not accessed by the congregation.

the court ruled that they are acting under the auspices of the congregation and therefore they must comply with data-protection laws.. keeping lists of do-not-calls also falls under this ruling.. why does the cult always feel that it is above the law?.

I know quite a few brothers and sisters who lost their call books over the years and these could have fallen into anyone's hands.

Also, calls are regularly passed on to other publishers and elders, etc. (I.e. sisters handing over male route calls or studies to a brother).

Yeah about 5 years ago there was a lot of rain and a river nearby burst its banks and flooded a few houses, some of which were jws and for weeks jws from my hall which hasn't been affected were saying "we're going to see a lot more of this since we're living in the last days, I hope everyone has their go bags ready".

There hasn't been another flood since and everyone's food and water in their go bags went out of date.

Is attendance down in your location too?

i was commenting on another thread about how local kh attendance is down.

memorial attendance was also way down and the circuit assembly had hundreds less people than what is typical.

my jw family has even mentioned it.

The numbers at my last few circuit assemblies went down from over 1400 to between 800 and 1100 the last few years. The regional assembly from 6-7 thousand down to never more than 4400 for the last 5 years. I have the Attendance numbers written down In assembly notebooks that I still have from the last ten years

Overwhelmed

does anyone else feel overwhelmed on what to believe?.

i've been doing lots of research on beliefs, evolution, creationism but i feel no further forward about what i truly believe.

for example i looked at the fossil record and tiktaalic and thought great it proves a lot but then i've seen counter arguments on youtube of people basically saying its a load of rubbish and doesn't prove anything.

I was talking to a jw and someone else the other week who don't know I used to be a jw and when I gave a comment about science the jw had the smug know it all look on his face when he said "I'm guessing you don't believe In creation". He said it as though I was stupid.

Im actually enjoying learning about evolution. I was watching a video on the evolution of whales and hippos yesterday and how the whale still has hip and leg bones even though they aren't used now.

I don't believe In the bible anymore, I am more looking for scientific answers to life/creation/evolution so I can hold my ground on why I dont believe in the bible.

Maybe I'm looking at it from a jw perspective though in that people who don't believe the bible are dumb and misguided and have no answers.

I feel as if I have to have more knowledge on life and how it got here but maybe I just need to learn to accept that we don't have the answers.

It's the smugness of jws that I hate In that they say they do have the answers (I'm sure you all know the smug smile I'm on about lol when they say they have the answers to why we're here, etc). They have no solid evidence to back up their claims.

I'm not really bothered about why we're here but it would be nice to know more about how we're here, if that makes sense. These are the areas of science I'm looking into, it's just confusing when there are so many conflicting arguments.

I'm not looking for the answers off anyone on here either @dupstepped, I'm just looking to see if others are doing similar research and are going or have gone through similar motions after they left and where they are now.
